Political parties are important institutions in a democracy. Opposition political parties are therefore, necessary for the sustenance of democracy.
Infact there cannot be democracy without stable and virile opposition political parties.
Recently, governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, met in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where they deliberated on issues affecting the party.
The PDP governors during the Ibadan meeting, reportedly resolved a number of issues affecting the party with a view to strengthening it as a major opposition party in Nigeria.
The party among other things, reiterated its role as a major opposition political party in the country.
They equally brainstormed on strategies to strengthen the party ahead of the next political dispensation.
The move by the PDP to stabilise the party to carry out its role as a major opposition ahead of 2027, is laudable. It is trite that a weak opposition can create room for bad governance and/or the emergence of dictatorship,
Other opposition political parties in the country should take steps towards positioning or repositioning themselves to carry out their role in deepening and sustaining the country’s democracy.
Moreso as some of the opposition political parties are presently engulfed in crisis.
The judiciary is expected to play a crucial role in this regard because of its constitutional role of adjudicating intra-party squabbles.
