PANDEF Withdraws From Mediation Efforts In Rivers Political Crisis, Says Wike’s Unwillingness To Ensure Peace

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has withdrawn from its mediation efforts in the political crisis between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The group cited Wike’s unwillingness to engage in dialogue as the primary reason for its decision.
A PANDEF representative speaking in a recent interview expressed frustration over the minister’s refusal to meet with them, despite multiple efforts to secure an audience. The official stated that while PANDEF had successfully met with Governor Fubara twice, their attempts to engage Wike had been met with silence.
“We have written at least two letters to him asking for a meeting, but he has not responded. Out of respect, we wanted to hear his side before bringing both parties together, but this has proven impossible,” the representative noted.
The official further revealed that Governor Fubara had immediately agreed to a peace meeting when approached by PANDEF, stating, “If PANDEF invites me to a meeting with Wike, I will gladly come.” Despite conveying this message to Wike’s allies, no progress has been made.
PANDEF’s decision to withdraw comes amid growing concerns about the deteriorating political situation in Rivers State. The group emphasized that its goal was to foster peace in the region, not to support any political faction.
“The crisis in Rivers State affects everyone, and the governor needs a stable environment to function effectively. We are not siding with anyone; we simply want peace,” the representative stressed.
PANDEF also dismissed claims that it had any financial motivations behind its involvement, pointing out that its members include former governors, ministers, and traditional rulers.
The group is now calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and convince Wike to engage in dialogue, stressing that without both parties participating in peace talks, there can be no resolution to the crisis.
