The traditional ruler of Atta Ancient kingdom in Ikeduru Local Government Area, Eze Geo Anika (Eze Umunnawuike 2 of Atta Ancient kingdom) says the noble fight against female genital mutilation, FGM is achievable and traditional rulers have taken it to their communities.
Eze Anika stated this in an interview with newsmen on the occasion of a day seminar/sensitization against FGM organized by the office at the Chairperson, ikeduru Local Government held last Thursday at the multi purpose hall of ikeduru LG Council, Iho.
He expressed their determination to take sensitization to the grassroots, adding that with consistent sensitization, it will be eradicated completely.
The royal father who represented the Chairman, ikeduru Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze PN Njoku, Uri 11 of Umuri, revealed that cutting of the genital organs has been almost been eradicated, but the problem now is pressing of the area by grandmothers who go for after birth visits (Omugwo), expressing dismay that they carry along with them, instruments for pressing the area.
He noted that sensitization and educational initiatives are critical, especially in rural communities, adding that the traditional rulers and community leaders must play an active role in protecting the rights of women and girls by speaking out against the ugly practice and assured that his community would work closely with the local and state government to eradicate FGM.
Eze Anika called on citizens and all stakeholders to strengthen advocacy efforts, stressing that the harmful effects of FGM have deeply and negatively affected society and pledged his commitment to ensure an end to it and safeguard the well-being of women and girls in society.
