The role of supervision in the school system cannot be overemphasised. This is so, especially, in the public school system.
In the past, the issue of supervision in public schools was taken seriously which helped to keep the quality of education not only at an appreciable level, but also ensured seriousness among the teachers, pupils, even the education administrators themselves.
It is trite to say that in the past, the fear of the school supervisors or “Ndi Nlete School” as they were called in vernacular (Igbo language), was the beginning of wisdom for school heads like Headmasters and Principals, classroom teachers and students.
Suffice to say that the practice ensured that products of public schools at that time gave good account of themselves.
It is doubtful if the same can be said of today’s public school system.
The seemingly lapse in supervision in the public school system could partly be blamed for the seeming failing confidence in public education system leading to the mushrooming of private schools.
The Imo state government through its Ministry of Education and relevant agencies should go a step further in prioritising the issue of supervision in public schools.
Achieving this also demands that the state government on its own part, priorities the welfare of teachers including prompt payment of their salaries as well as issues affecting their promotions, training and re-training, among others.
