The University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Umuagwo, in a ground breaking event on Friday, January 17, inaugurated its first ever Student Representative Committee . The grand event which held at the Institution’s Entrepreneurship Centre marked a significant leap in the management and students relationship in the school.
A release by the Acting co-ordinator, IPRP, Ozumba Chibuoyim stated that the Student Representative Committee which would in the interim cover for a properly elected Student Union Government were selected from each of the five faculties of the institution with every one of them averaging a CGPA of 4.2 and above . The acting Dean of Student affairs ,Dr. Ekene Nwabueze in his opening remarks urged the selected executives to put their office to good use. He informed them that the position was not one orchestrated to distract them from their academics or to intimidate fellow students but to bridge the gap between the University Management and the students.
The visibly elated Acting Vice -Chancellor ,Prof. Christopher Chiedozie Eze in declaring the occasion open eulogized the academic and behavioural strides of the Student Representative Committee nominees , pointing out their impressive CGPA’s and involvement in positive activities around and beyond campus. He urged them to carry out their duties with gusto making sure that the purpose of their constitution is achieved. He further hinted that if they did serve well, they will be saddled with the responsibility of organizing the first proper Student Union Government (SUG) election for the institution.
Also present at the event and in making his speech, the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary and Technical Education, Prof. Victor Nwachukwu who was ably represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry advised the students to see their offices as an opportunity to learn. He advised them to make sure they graduate in both academic excellence and leadership opining that this opportunity be used to train themselves beyond their courses of study.
The Student Representative Committee nominees:
Ogagaohene Paradise (Chairman ), Miss Alfred Ugochukwu (secretary ) ,Okpara Bright, Benedict Monday, and Jeremiah Samuel A were thereafter called up to take their oath of office. The oath was administered by the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin), Dr. Emmanuel Uzodinma . The Chairman Master Paradise Ogagaohene thereafter gave an acceptance speech that drew cheers and hand claps from the visibly elated students.
Also present at the inauguration were the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) ,Dr. Obinna Adumanya , the Bursar, Mr. Robert Anikputa , the University Librarian, Prof. Chidi Nwosu , Deans , Heads of Departments, Heads of units and students alike.
The occasion also enjoyed the presence of Student Union Government,SUG Presidents from Federal University of Technology Owerri,FUTO, Benjamin Uwajumogu College of Education and Federal Collage of Land Resources Technology.
