Flooding has ravaged parts of Owerri the Imo State capital in the past.
Should the rains return today, Owerri
risks potential flooding that could result from garbage-filled drainages.
A peep into the drainages within the metropolis will reveal the presence of garbage or refuse. This phenomenon stems from the existence of open drainages prevalent in Imo and other states of the federation, as well as the poor environmental habit of citizens.
While the stuffed drainages often time produce deadly odours inimical to the health of residents, the garbage inside constitutes obstacle to free flow of water when it is rains; and this can lead to flooding.
As January is almost running out, and signs that the rains will soon return are imminent, the state government through its relevant agencies, needs to start clearing and desilting
the drainages now that the dry season is still subsisting.
Doing so will go a long way in saving residents from potential risk of flood ravaging their homes when the rains finally start.
