2027 Governorship: Imo Charter Of Equity DIED During 2024 LDA Polls – Nwachukwu

.”Owerri, Okigwe must synergise to stop Orlu”

..Says: Owerri Zone must get strong candidate or…

A Senatorial aspirant for Imo East Senate seat during the 2023 general elections, Chief Mike Nwachukwu (MpidiKe Ulakwo Obube)  has said that the  experience  of last year’s Imo Local Government elections points to the fact that the Imo Charter of Equity may already be dead, and could finally be buried in 2027.

Chief Nwachukwu in a chat with media executives on Wednesday in Owerri, expressed shock at the manner the same people clamouring for the zoning of the governorship position to  Owerri zone, turned round to throw away the issue of zoning during the November 2024 LGA elections in Imo.

Nwachukwu who holds the title of Mpi Dike, hinted that the trampling and disregard for equity or zoning played out in many parts of Imo during November 2023  LGA polls including in his own Obube/Agballa/Ulakwo(OAU) Ward, as well as in Owerri North LGA. He further revealed that in his Obube/Agballa/Ulakwo Ward, the position of councilor surprisingly went to Ulakwo instead of Agballa going by the local zoning arrangement.

The two-time senatorial candidate noted that the same scenario equally played out at the LGA level where according to him, the position of council chairman went to Uratta bloc rather than Emekuku/Emii bloc in line with the internal zoning arrangement.

He maintained that with the experience of the Imo LGA elections last year, no one should expect anything different in terms of zoning, come 2027 Imo gubernatorial election.

Nwachukwu  also warned that Orlu Zone is not relenting in its bid to take another shot at the Imo governorship in 2027.

“What most of us do not yet understand and take into our psyche is that Imo Charter of Equity which we are largely hinging the governorship ambitions of the two zones on come 2027 is dead.

“It died during the last LGA elections when all those championing it could not as much as raise their voices against the Charter of (In)equity that ran the length and breadth of the 27 LGAs and 305 wards in Imo State,” Nwachukwu opined.

The erstwhile National Assembly legislative aide reasoned that if the Imo Charter of Equity means nothing at the local level, it implies that it also means nothing at the state or governorship level. He reminded Imo politicians that “all politics is local.”

While envisaging that the forces that destroyed zoning or power sharing arrangements across the 27 Imo LGAs and 305 wards would as well “bury the Charter in the 2027  governorship election, Nwachukwu advised Owerri Zone to think less of zoning, but to rather shop for a candidate who has an optimal combination of political network and reach across the electoral wards in Imo to be able to realize their ambition of producing the next Imo governor.

He stressed the imperative for Owerri Zone to engage Okigwe Zone in robust dialogue ,if both zones must stop Orlu candidate ahead of next Imo governorship poll.
