The city of Owerri went agog Saturday as Dr Gerald Opiah, the son of the former Education Minister (state) and former Speaker Imo state House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Goodluck Nana Opiah walks down the isle with his heartthrob, former Miss Nanita Emenyonu, at St. James Anglican Church, Uzii, Owerri, Imo State.
Fielding questions from newsmen after the church wedding, the former Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly and former House of representative member, representing Ohaji Egbema/Oguta Federal constituency in the Green chamber of the National Assembly expressed excitement at the development, saying, “I am full of joy and gratitude to God Almighty for making today a reality.
“I had given out the hands of two daughters in marriage, but this is the first time my son is bringing a wife. I have been giving out, now I am taking in and I pray that this will be the beginning of more people to come into my house”.
He expressed gratitude to the church, especially the Bishops and other clergymen who officiated the holy matrimony service, his in-laws, his family and friends as well as the family and friends of his in-laws and all people who came from far and near to celebrate with them.
He said: “A lot of people came from overseas. I think it is a mark of goodwill and honour to me and I appreciate them so much.
Asked for his advice for the new couple, the former Minister of Education had this to say: “I think they have had enough in the church, however, marriage is a permanent venture, in it, they need to tolerate, accommodate, understand and carry each other along.
“My advice is that they should hold firmly unto God, because with God, all things are possible”
Opiah promised that both families will be there to give the very young couple all the support they need, until they could be able to stand firmly on their own to carry on with the responsibilities of family life.
Earlier, the couple had promised to stand by each other at all times and situations, remain faithful to their marriage vows, till death do them part.
The wedding reception which took place at Chillis event center was chaired by the Imo State chairman of All Progressives Congress,APC political party, Marcdonald Ebere.
It witnessed the presence of dignitaries from all walks of life and from different fields of endeavor, including high ranking politicians from the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary, religious and traditional leaders, captains of industries, sports men and women, as well as celebrities.
