In a video shared on Symfoni TV, Imo Ikenga Ugochinyere, a federal lawmaker and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), addressed the controversial detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Despite multiple court orders for Kanu’s release, he remains in custody, raising questions about the fairness of the legal process.
Ugochinyere criticized the situation, attributing Kanu’s prolonged detention to ethnic bias against the Igbo people. He also highlighted the case of an Igbo traditional ruler imprisoned in Lagos for voicing concerns over attacks on Igbo businesses and citizens. According to Ugochinyere, these instances reflect a selective application of justice and a disregard for the constitutional rights of the Igbo community.
“Why is he still in detention when there’s no trial? Because he’s an Igbo man, that’s why,” Ugochinyere remarked. He further pointed out that the imprisoned traditional ruler is being prosecuted for warning against attacks on Igbo people and businesses, insisting that the Igbo have a right to defend themselves and participate freely in the democratic process.
