The world will celebrate the Christmas season in a couple of weeks away from now. It is period christians the world over commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ in the First Century AD.
Obviously, the Christmas period is usually characterised by a sharp rise in crime wave occasioned by increase in movement and other socio-economic activities.
One issue that is of serious concern is the despicable attitude of desperation on the part of some people in their quest for money and other material acquisition during Christmas. This stems from the erroneous notion that Christmas is a period to make money by hook or crook.
This tends to explain the prevalence of crimes and vices such as ritual killings, kidnapping and its twin brother – ‘one chance,’ armed robbery, stealing, among others, that are commonly associated with Yuletide.
This period is also characterised by increase in vehicular movement which often results in road accidents.
Imo and other states of the Southeast apparently grapple with security challenges, which makes it imparative for security agencies to redouble their efforts especially, in the area of surveillance and patrol.
It becomes even more instructive as large numbers of imolites resident in other states and those living outside Nigeria are expected to
visit home.
Relevant security agencies including the traffic division and other relevant authorities concerned, have a duty to ensure safety on the highways. There is the need for relevant authorities to keep tab on the activities of hotels and guest houses as it is normal that many of those who return home for Christmas often lodge or retire in hotels and guest houses within the period.
In this regard, eternal vigilance on the part of the citizens is key, given that security agents are not spirits, but rely on intelligence gathering for achieving efficiency in the discharge of their onerous task.
