The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to reach out to former President Goodluck Jonathan for assistance in addressing the country’s ongoing economic crisis. Recent reports from Naija News indicate that public outrage has erupted following significant increases in fuel prices.
The NNPC’s retail stations have raised petrol prices dramatically, from ₦897 to ₦1,030 per litre in Abuja, and from ₦868 to ₦998 per litre in Lagos. Other regions have experienced similar hikes.
During an interview with Punch, NNPP National Secretary Dipo Olaoyoku expressed skepticism regarding the current administration’s ability to resolve the nation’s issues. He stated, “Nothing surprises us in Nigeria anymore. This government lacks the solutions needed to tackle our problems. When faced with a crisis, a government that opts for easy fixes signals a long road ahead for Nigeria.”
Olaoyoku criticized Tinubu’s decision to remove subsidies on his first day in office without fully understanding their implications or who was benefiting from them. He also pointed out the administration’s decision to float the naira while Nigeria was heavily reliant on imported fuel, with prices dictated by the naira’s value.
“This government is devoid of ideas,” he said. “Sadly, looking at the appointments made, it’s hard to find any competent individuals among them. I truly feel for Nigerians. After weathering the storm under Buhari, look at what Nigeria has become—it’s catastrophic. This government shows no compassion for the citizens.”
Additionally, Olaoyoku lamented that rather than bringing in experienced technocrats from various fields, the President has surrounded himself with political allies. He suggested that unless Tinubu seeks guidance from seasoned political figures like Jonathan, the populace will continue to suffer under the burden of hardship. “They should consider asking Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for insights on how he managed to keep the naira’s value at ₦200 to the dollar before the APC took over. They need to reach out to him,” he added.
