The Imo State House of Assembly has urged the governor of the State, Sen.Hope Uzodinma to direct the ministry of works and other relevant bodies to urgently intervene and save the lives of residents of works layout around standard shoe industry in Kurume Uche street Owerri Municipal Council.
The call followed the adoption of the motion moved by the member representing Owerri Municipal Council in the State assembly,Hon. Clinton Amadi who enjoined his colleagues to lend their supports to the motion to save the lives of Imo citizens.
Hon.Amadi while presenting the motion appreciated the gesture made by the governor for the construction of the Balloon Technology Tunnel aimed at easy flow and evacuation of flood during rainy season as a means of solving the problem of flooding.
He noted that before now that the Balloon Technology has been serving the purpose it was created for not until this year as the borrow pit meant to contain the water is filled up with refuse leading to the blockade of the tunnel.
The Owerri Municipal lawmaker observed that due to the closure of the tunnel with dumps water cannot find its way to borrow pit hence the flooding which according to him has destroyed houses and properties to the extent of taken a life.
He pointed out that the borrow pit needs to work on by evacuating the debris and sand in order to save lives and properties that are already in danger.
The motion after robust deliberations was adopted as the house resolved to urge the governor to direct the ministry of works and other relevant bodies to embark on prompt evacuation of dumps from the borrow pit and clear the tunnel for easy flow of water.
