The women organization formed, as an umbrella body for women of South East extraction, known as Pan Igbo Women International, has inaugurated its Executive Members in Owerri, the Imo State Capital.
The inauguration took place on Friday, August 30, at Owerri .
The National President of the women organization, Barr. Ijeomah Igboanusi, who was Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the Inauguration ceremony, in an address, stated that concerned Igbo leaders asked her to rally Igbo women together, to forster peace and progress in Igbo Land. She said that women are veritable instruments to curb all forms of vices undertaken by their children, having carried them in their wombs for upwards of nine months before giving birth to them.
Barr Igboanusi stated that her group will look into a number of things that have gone wrong in Igbo Land, including the decline of speaking the Igbo language , insecurity, and criminality.
She thanked all who graced the occasion and assured that the body will go places to preach the message of Igbo survivability. She said that they will reach out to women in other Igbo speaking states like Delta, Rivers and so on, some of whom she said were present at the inauguration. She then hinted that the body will hold a Seminar in Enugu very soon.
Chairman of the occasion, High Chief Summers V.C. Nwokie, popularly known as Ikukuoma, thanked the celebrants for giving him the honour of being Chairman of the event while thanking the attendees for finding time to come.
In an interview with the media after the event, Ikukuoma said: “Train a woman, you train the nation. I’m happy that Igbo women have united. I am awed by the decline of Igbo language. I am however happy that it is part of the agenda of the Igbo women to tackle. Together, all of us will achieve that. I came to the occasion as a leader, not as a politician. Leaders plan for next generation while politicians plan for next election.”
Patron of the women group, Chief Emeka Diwe, while addressing the media said:”I represent Town Unions in Igbo Land. We are doing similar things across the length and breath of Igbo Land. I want to support the programme. Women are better to work with in Nigeria today, because they are devoid of corruption and have very low propensity towards that.
“I like to work with the women to improve the peace at home. The call for Akuruo ulo, which is uppermost in the agenda of Igbo Town Unions, is an addendum to their programme. I will, therefore, support them in the interest of Igbo Land,”he stated.
