The state high court granted bail to 19 protesters who had been arrested during the “End Bad Governance” protest in Katsina.
The protesters, detained for exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly, were recently released on bail.
Meanwhile, Bar. Ibrahim Umar, the state chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has commendably vowed to follow the case to its logical conclusion, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring justice is served and the rights of the protesters are protected.
Bar. Umar expressed concern over the police’s mistreatment of the protesters, including minors. “It is unfortunate that the police resorted to brutality and intimidation. We will not stand for such human rights violations,” he added.
The protesters were arrested during a peaceful demonstration against poor governance in Katsina. The police used excessive force to disperse the crowd, resulting in the arrest of 19 individuals.
The NBA’s involvement in the case underscores the organization’s commitment to promoting justice and accountability. Granting bail to the protesters is a positive step toward upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms.
As the case progresses, the NBA has promised to closely monitor the proceedings to ensure that the protesters receive a fair trial.
This incident serves as a reminder of the necessity for police reform and accountability to prevent future instances of brutality and intimidation.
