Honorable Amobi Ogah, a member representing the Isikwuato/Umunneche Federal Constituency of Abia State, bemoaned the numerous injustices meted out to the
Igbo people. He emphasized that the Igbo people’s identity is not exclusively determined by their geographic location when he remarked that they feel as though they are not a part of Nigeria.
Ogah emphasized that the ‘ Southeast regions recognition and equitable treatment should take precedence over the establishment of a new state. Igbos are spread throughout several states, including the Rivers and Delta, but he maintained that the main emphasis should be on correcting the regional imbalance and making sure the South East Zone has a fair amount of resources and representation.As cited by The Daily Sun News, Ogah stated in an interview with Channels Television, “Igbo have been denied so many things. The Igbo are feeling as if they are not part of this country. Not because we are talking about creating a new state; my brother from the other side is talking about Anioma; see, it cannot only be when there is time to talk about this kind of thing that they will agree that they’re Igbo people. What we are talking about today is the geopolitical zone. There is nothing like Anioma; Anioma is in the South as of today. We are talking about the
South East . Now, if you’re talking about the South East, any state you’re talking about should come from the South East. Is not the issue of anioma. He continued, “If we’re talking about, oh, Igbos are going on their own, because there are Igbos in Rivers, part of Ikwere are Igbos. So, if Igbos are in Asaba, there is no issue; what we are talking about is an issue of region for now. Asaba/Anioma is in the south. So let them shift a little; let’s talk about the southeast zone that we are talking about. Let us balance the Southeast; let us feel a sense of belonging.
