Rivers Crisis: Wike Sacked Elected LG Chairmen  Under Amaechi Govt –Ugochinyere

…Says: Tenure extention, illegal, undemocratic, unconditional

Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, the House of Repres

entatives member from Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, has claimed that the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike dissolved the tenures of Local Government chairmen elected under Rotimi Amaechi immediately he took over as Governor.

Ugochinyere said this was in contrast to what Siminalayi Fubara did as Governor of Rivers State. The lawmaker said despite the insults Fubara received from some of the Local Government chairmen, he still allowed them finish their three year tenure in office. He frowned at the law which extended the tenures of the Local Government chairmen.

He said such law should not be allowed in a decent society.

He said in an interview on TVC: “When Wike was Governor, immediately he came onboard in 2015, he dissolved the elected Local Government chairmen that were under Amaechi’s

government. But Fubara despite the insults and the attacks allowed the constitutional timeline to play out. They finished their three years.”

“Even when some of them were telling him, ‘who born you well’, ‘I’ll kill you’, ‘I’ll bury you’, the Governor still allowed them to finish their three year tenure.”

“Then at the midnight of their expiration, you now go to one two bedroom in Emohua and come up with a law and say you have extended their tenure that they can remain in office. That’s a constitutional kill, it’s an act against democracy. It’s not allowed in any decent society because if you allowed that to stand, it means that the national assembly can wake up one morning and extend the tenure of the president.

The State  House of Assembly can also extend the tenure of a Governor.”
