Madubuachi Idam, a vocal activist lawyer, emphasized on Saturday that the clamor for Biafra transcends the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, the head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and self-styled Biafra Prime Minister, Simon Ekpa.
Idam underscored that the yearning for an independent state of Biafra is deeply ingrained within the spirit of every Igbo individual. In a recent interview with DAILY POST, he pointed out that while Kanu and Ekpa may represent visible faces of the movement, their methods of agitation might not sit comfortably with everyone in the Southeast region.
Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, following his arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria. During this period of his incarceration, the Southeast region has witnessed a surge in insecurity, marked by heightened activities of armed groups.
Addressing the ongoing agitation, Idam commented, “The agitation for the emancipation of Biafra has always been a spirit in every Igbo man.”
He further elaborated, “The detention of Kanu has not quelled the agitation because it is not confined to him or Ekpa alone. It is a spirit that lives within the hearts of all Igbo people, irrespective of the challenges and obstacles they face.”
