In a bold move aimed at securing the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, his legal team has submitted a comprehensive list of judgements to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja.
Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, the leader of Kanu’s legal team, disclosed to journalists on Thursday that the judgements encompass rulings from both domestic and international courts directing the release of the IPOB leader.
This action comes in response to a statement attributed to the AGF, in which he claimed ignorance of Kanu’s case and asserted that his fate would be determined by the court.
Ejiofor also called upon President Bola Tinubu to honor the various judgments mandating Kanu’s release.
Earlier in May, Fagbemi had remarked that resolving the case of the detained IPOB leader was a matter for the competent court to decide, noting the distinction between Kanu’s case and that of Omoyele Sowore.
Days prior, Kanu’s legal team had filed a preliminary objection at the Federal High Court Abuja, challenging the jurisdiction of the court to proceed with the trial against him.
Part of the legal challenge pertains to the constitutionality of the charges leveled against Kanu and seeks to quash specific counts in the indictment.
However, Justice Binta Nyako dismissed Kanu’s plea for the reinstatement of his revoked bail and his relocation from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to either house arrest or prison custody.
Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021, following his arrest in Kenya, and continues to face terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
