The governorship candidate of the Labour Party,LP in the last election in Imo state, Senator Athan Achonu has allegedly rejected the defection plan by a former Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha who recently dumped his party.
A source in the LP, Imo state chapter revealed that the Senator made his stands known to close allies when the visit to Abia State Governor, Dr.Alex Otti by Ihedioha filtered into the Media space.
It can be recalled that few days after Ihedioha’s resignation from the PDP ,he began moves to join the Labour Party, LP in Imo state.
The source suggested that it could be a smart move to ostensibly be in comfortable position as the LP’s forthcoming Ward, LGA, State and National congresses progresses.
It was also disclosed that Ihedioha had during the weekend paid an unscheduled visit to the Abia state Governor, Alex Otti ahead of his rumoured defection.
Regrettably, the source revealed that the Abia state Governor, Otti may have been worried that Ihedioha neither informed nor visited the Labour Party Governorship candidate in the 2023 election in Imo state, Senator Achonu, first ,since after his resignation nor invited him to accompany him on the visit to Abia.
He maintained that Governor Otti may have made it emphatically clear that since Labour Party respects dedication of members, and contribution to party development, it would amounts to injustice to dissolve the structure of the party in Imo state because of new entrants.
According to the source,he was not sure if ,in order to ensure that his meeting with Ihedioha was not misinterpreted, Governor Otti may have spoken to Senator Achonu later.
The source also revealed that Senator Achonu may vehemently rejected Ihedioha’s move to join the party, allegedly citing his overbearing influence in his las party .
He recalled Ihedioha’s comment in far away Ghana in 2023 where he described anyone who voted Peter Obi in the Presidential election as saboteur .
The statement he opined remains fresh and capable of destroying the LP’s reputation.
Meanwhile, the source still posits that Senator Achonu has allegedly called on Ward and Local Government Exco of Labour Party in Imo state not to panic over their positions, assuring them that no new comer would ever unseat them.
According to him, the one armed General defeated a retired General with one arm, the issue of Ihedioha coming to reportedly create havoc in the party can’t be tolerated.
“We shall do everything possible to disgrace them. Labour Party is not PDP where one person claimed to be the owner of everything before he was pursued. This time, we shall deal decisively with them squarely as the event unfolds”
