Serious jubilation has reportedly rocked the Imo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as former Deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha resigns from the party.
According to reports, there was wild jubilation by thousands of members and supporters of Imo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party as ex House of Representatives principal officer made public his decision to exit from the party.
Ihedioha whose letter of resignation flooded social media platforms sparked off excitement when prominent social media outlets broke the news of his exit from PDP after 26 years as a card carrying member.
The former lawmaker who resigned from the party in the build up of the party congresses scheduled for June, later this year gave reasons for his exit, “Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs. Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is, sadly no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules, or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress,” he said in a Tuesday letter addressed to the Party’s chairman in his Mbutu Ward of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.
“It is in the light of the foregoing that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party effective immediately.”, Ihedioha wrote.
Earlier, stakeholders, leaders and LGA chairmen as well as members and supporters of the party stormed the Okigwe road state secretariat of the party to receive the Acting chairman of Imo state chapter of PDP,Hon. Chidi Dike who represented the state at the 98th National Executive Committee meeting held at the national headquarters of the party. His reception at the party secretariat was followed by the raising of the party’s flag which signifies a change in leadership.
It will be recall that the erstwhile party chairman, Engr Charles Ugwuh was sacked following a High Court judgement on grounds of violations of party’s constitution amongst others.
Commending the Imo state chapter of the party for the warm reception in honour of the acting state chairman of Imo PDP, Deputy Director, Media and Publicity of the Imo PDP Governorship Campaign Council in the last Off Season 2023 gubernatorial election in the state, Sir Sunny Ndukwu said Ihedioha’s exit is good riddance to bad rubbish. He wondered how the party had tolerated him for so long, considering his Rebuild Imo Group’s anti-party activities which he said were clearly inimical to the PDP’s victory at the November 2023 governorship election in the state. No man is an Island and the party belongs to the people and not an individual.
Ndukwu maintained that Ihedioha lost out in the power game and it is normal in politics as no champion reigns forever. He has benefited a lot from the party and it is expected that in any contest, once you are not favoured in the party primaries, in the spirit of sportsmanship, you are expected to support the party’s candidate instead of engaging in anti-party activities, he said.
While urging the new leadership of the party in the state to set in motion reconcilliatory moves to ensure a united party structure ahead of the congresses.
