The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi expressed deep concern over the handling of his trial in the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government, stating that it has shifted from prosecution to persecution.
Speaking at a Press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel to Kanu, emphasized that the treatment Kanu is currently facing at the hands of the Federal Government, especially in his trial for terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is unjust.
Ejimakor highlighted the challenges they face in gaining access to Kanu for adequate preparation of his defence. He noted that the Department of State Services,DSS restricts their access to Kanu, hindering their efforts to obtain statements from him.
“The DSS always restrain us, each time we make efforts to get statement from Kanu. The allegations against the IPOB leader are personal and he is the only person that can tell his lawyers what he did and what did not do and what lines of defense he can rely on”. Ejimakor stated.
He further emphasized that the law guarantees an accused person the right to choose their legal representation, adding that documents they bring for Kanu’s review are copied and scanned by the DSS, sometimes without being returned.
Ejimakor highlighted Kanu’s previous ordeal in the Nigerian criminal justice system from 2015 to 2022, stressing that the IPOB leader does not deserve such treatment. He asserted that Kanu is entitled to a fair hearing and urged President Bola Tinubu to review the charges against Kanu to assess their merit, noting that it is not a crime for someone to express a desire not to be part of a particular entity.
