As a way to ensure safety of lives by less road accidents , the Imo State House of Assembly,IMHA has resolved to end movement of heavy duty vehicles plying the State roads during the hours of 7am to 9pm.
The resolution was reached after the House adopted a motion presented by the member representing Owerri Municipal State Constituency Hon Clinton Amadi.
During the presentation,Hon.Amadi informed the House that what prompted the motion was observations he made on the unwholesome activities of Heavy Duty Vehicle drivers who ply the roads without any recourse to human life mostly, in day time.
The Lawmaker noted that Owerri being the capital city of the State observes a lot of human and vehicular activities on daily basis as a result of that, the roads within the the capital city and beyond are filled with vehicular activities conveying people and goods within and outside the capital city.
The Lawmaker further noted that because of influx of vehicles in and outside the capital that it will be hazardous allowing Heavy Duty vehicles Plying same roads at the same time.
The Owerri Municipal representative, observed that drivers of Heavy Duty Vehicles don’t consider other road users as they ply the roads with recklessness, not adhering to road safety laws.
Hon.Amadi prayed that inorder to ensure safety of Ndimo and other inhabitants the House should invoke Law No.26 of 2019 restricting Heavy Duty Vehicles from using the roads in Owerri Capital City between the hours of 7 am to 9pm.
The House adopted the motion and resolved to urge the Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma to direct Police and all agencies of law enforcement to immediately enforce the law.
