Fears arising from the worsening security situation are increasing day by day in various parts of Nigeria following the recent kidnappings and adoptions, one of which was the escape by whiskers of one Mr. Nonso Damian Ohanaemere in the hands of a deadly militant group operating in his hometown, Orsu Ihite Ukwa, Orsu LGA, Imo State.
Sources in the area have revealed that the security persons are being sponsored to avenge the death of some of their personnel who were allegedly killed by the natives when the military invaded the town sometime in 2021 to flush out the militants.
According to the developments, the incident which occurred on January 17, 2024 has led to a good number of residents of the town fleeing for their dear lives.
Newsmen monitoring the trends had gathered that the activist, Mr Nonso Damian Ohanaemere who is popular in the area especially for his vocal activism.
He was reported to have returned from Norway where he obtained a Master’s degree, and was said to have come back to the town for the burial ceremony of their aged parents who died sometime in 2019 and who’s bodies have been kept in the morgue due to the prevalent security situation in the area.
Sources revealed that as the family was trying to have a meeting on the safer way to perform the burial rites, the militants on that fateful night struck and invaded their house in a commando style ,wearing face masks as well as brandishing guns, knives, explosives and other dangerous weapons.
They were reported to have seized the activist, his two brothers and demanded a ₦30 million ransom for their release.
Sources said that they were whisked away to an unknown destination by the militants but that the cheering news was that the next day, about noon, the activist was spotted wondering about in a thick forest in the town and was rescued by some good Samaritans but with regret that they were yet to hear about the two brothers of the activist.
Sources closer to them further revealed that they believed he has been declared a security risk.
Investigations also showed that the activist before his miraculous escape has been a firebrand and consistent critic of what he described as brutal method being adopted by the military in Nigeria when they invaded Orsu town in Orsu Ihiteukwa in search of militants in 2021, and also believed they adopted crude, barbaric and inhuman method which led to the killing of several youths in his town.
Newsmen gathered that when the activist was engaged in his Master’s degree programme in Norway, he made a video which went viral where he was seen lampooning the military as well as Imo state government for allowing such heinous actions to take place in his town.
It was also gathered that since that video was circulated, the activist has been exposed to series of threats through telephone calls, and sometimes being trailed by unknown gun men.
Unconfirmed sources revealed that he was attacked recently in Lagos state,Nigeria where he fled to have shelter having plans of leaving the country.
As at the time of filing this report, no statement could be received from the Police as it affects the matter.
