…Cites Court Orders, UN Human Rights Council
Ahead of the anticipated ruling of today by the Supreme Court on the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a member of the United States House of Representatives, Jarvis Johnson is said to have made a passionate appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria to consider an immediate and unconditional release of the detained IPOB leader.
Kanu has been held in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, following his arrest in Kenya in June 2021.
The US federal lawmaker is said to have alluded to what he described as the consensus of legal opinion both within and outside the Nigeria anticipating the Supreme Court’s affirmation of previous judgements including orders on Kanu’s matter, adding that he was allegedly “extraordinarily renditioned” by the government of Nigeria from Kenya in June 2022.
Johnson’s position appear to have been influenced by the Enugu State High Court decision in October 2023, including those of the High Court Umuahia, Abia State, and the Court of Appeals in Abuja, which ordered ” Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release.”
The US lawmaker was equally said to have referenced the United Nations Human Rights Council’s stance on July 20, 2022, which reportedly found Kanu’s reported “solitary confinement” in violation of international human rights contentions. He was said to have called on the Supreme Court to to uphold the judgement of its subordinate courts and various international tribunals.
