The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC. Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Imo State, Prof. Mrs Sylvia Agu has announced the preparedness of the commission to conduct a free, fair and credible governorship election come Saturday Nov. 11, 2023.
Prof. Agu stated this while addressing Journalists in a press briefing at the State Office, Owerri, recently.
She noted that the Commission has conducted all the pre-electoral activities prior to the Saturday elections within the timeline stipulated by the Electoral Act and election guidelines in a professional, credible and transparent manner, adding that the Commission held several stakeholders’ meetings at various levels to dialogue with the stakeholders and collaborate with them towards achieving a successful election.
According to her, the meetings sought to strategically engage the security agencies under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), political parties and their agents, traditional rulers and their executive cabinets, religious leaders and faith based groups, youths and women groups, organizations of persons with disabilities (OPWDs), civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations, media executives and journalists, different voter education providers and all who have made monumental contributions in organizing and conducting a free, fair, credible, inclusive and safe elections in the State.
Hon REC. commended the Journalists for their interest to contribute to the successful conduct of the election which will afford all Imo state electorates the opportunity to not only determine who their next governor is but to also decide the political and economic direction of the state for the next four years.
Agu opined that the off-circle governorship elections coming up in the three States of Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo State this Saturday have put Imo State into sharp focus, because it’s slipped out of the general election timeline since January, 2020 and that the Commission is set to conduct her first ever off-circle governorship election in the in less than a week now.
