“Report Just Reaching Me Has It That My Own Governorship Candidate Was Attacked in Owerri West LGA”
The Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, has disclosed that shortly before the security town hall meeting got underway, he received a report indicating that his party’s candidate for governor had been attacked in the Owerri West Local Government area. It is difficult for the party to have faith in the assurances given by security agencies about the conduct of free and fair elections in the three states, according to Abure, who noted that such incidents of attacks on candidates make this difficult.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Abure stated that there are serious concerns related to his party’s involvement in the elections in Kogi and Imo States. He highlighted that election security is a crucial factor for the successful conduct of elections.
According to him, “Well, for me, election security is key to the success of elections. Without security, obviously, there would be voters apathy; people would be afraid to come out to come and vote and this will not be good for our electoral process. There’re very serious worries with respect for us as a party in Kogi and Imo State. Just this evening, report just reaching me has it that my own governorship candidate was attacked in Owerri West Local Government Area. Just this evening, the report is just reaching me. And while this town hall meeting is about to start, and my candidate is subject of attack, it makes it difficult for us to take into account all the assurances from the security agencies that elections in these three states will be free and fair.”
