The coming together of South East stakeholders to dialogue and build consensus on how to tackle the insecurity ravaging the region, is a necessary step that should be taken if the desire of the people to restore peace and security to the region is to be actualized.
Distinguished Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi,who represents Imo East Senatorial District, Owerri Zone,in the Senate in the National Assembly, Abuja,made the observation in Owerri, Thursday,28 September,2023, on the occasion of a two day South East Summit on Security and Economy.
The lawmaker who interacted with journalists on the sideline of the event,which was graced by prominent Igbo leaders from diverse sectors, among whom were the five governors of the zone, noted that since the insecurity in the region was adversely affecting all citizens of the region, whether at home or abroad, the best way to find a lasting solution to it, was to talk as one people, reach agreement and take collective action.
The lawmaker who blamed the free fall of the value system of the region as one of the enablers of the menace, pointed out that since the blame for the regrettable situation should be heaped on generality of the people of the region, instead of resorting to needless pointing of accusing fingers at one another, sitting down together to dialogue remains the best road to take to permanently address the menace.
Regretting that the insecurity bedeviling the region has snowballed into a frightening existential challenge, as could be seen in its devastating effects on the socioeconomic and political trajectory of the zone, Distinguished Senator Onyewuchi, however, expressed happiness that the leaders and stakeholders of Ala Igbo have risen up to the challenge of proffering effective solution to it, as demonstrated by the two days parley.
Lauding the five governors of the zone for organizing the forum which brought all stakeholders in the region together, and the stakeholders for demonstrating patriotism and love for the homeland, by answering the clarion call, the Labour Party Senator, harped on the need to give ear to every shade of opinion and view canvassed at the summit, so that a holistic, implementable and result oriented roadmap could be arrived at, at the end of discussions.
The Senate Committee Chairman on National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, further emphasized the need for action to be taken on decisions and agreements reached at the end of the all important summit, for the restoration of peace, security and development to the region.
