Ngor Okpala people like their Aboh Mbaise neighbours defied the torrential downpour of Tuesday, 15 September, 2023 and trooped out in large numbers to show solidarity to the governorship candidate of Imo Labour Party, Distinguished Senator Athan Achonu, as his campaign train landed Umuneke, the local government area headquarters.
An obviously shocked and pained Distinguished Senator Achonu could not hide his disappointment and dismay over what he perceived as gross and unconscionable neglect of an area which he said is not only a gateway to the state, but also a strategic local government area, in view of its enormous agricultural and industrial potentials.
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd which defied the heavy downpour to welcome him, the Imo Labour Party candidate for the November 11 governorship election, noted that if the APC government could abandon an LGA which is the mirror through which a first visitor will see and perceive the state, then condition of the other local governments could better be imagined than told.
He said the Gov Uzodinma administration’s unjustifiable and condemnable abandonment of the area particularly its road infrastructure, only goes to highlight its Visionless, anti people and anti development leadership style.
According to him, a government with even a morsel of vision and passion for good governance, the people and development, would have at least taken steps to fix the physical environment of the area hosting the Sam Mbakwe Airport, because doing that will come with a lot of multiplier effects.
The frontline candidate for the November election stressed that beyond raising the tourism outlook of the state, with impression it will create of the state as being conducive for leisure and relaxation, it would also open doors for badly needed investments to flow into the state, as potential investors first impression of the state, which naturally would come from the airport locality, could persuade or dissuade him from going ahead with his investment plans or, backing down from it.
He assured that with his election in the coming election the ugly narrative of the council would become a thing of the past, just as it’s enormous agricultural potentials and strategic location would serve as spring board to turning it into the state’s economy hub.
He explained that his administration will achieve that vision through a two pronged developmental plan which will see to the siting of one of the two industrial parks planned for Owerri Zone in the area, as well as reviving and turning the comatose cargo component of the Sam Mbakwe Airport into the West Africa s cargo hub.
Distinguished Senator Achonu further reiterated his resolve to grant full financial and administrative autonomy to the 27 local councils of the state, arguing that the collective quest of Imolites for integrated and holistic growth and development of the state, will never see the light of the day, without local government autonomy.
He disclosed that those governing the state today are slave drivers and task masters, and not servant leaders as they ought to be, charging the electorate to take advantage of the November election to free themselves deprived, subjugated and the state from avoidable insecurity and bloodletting, impoverishment, poverty and intimidation by booting them out of office.
The deputy governorship candidate, Hon Tony Nwulu bemoaned the highly deplorable condition of roads in the area especially the Ulakwo/ Nguru/ Umuneke/ Nkwoala, Ulakwo/ Imerienwe/ Umuekwunne and Ihitte Junction/Umukabi/ Umuneke Roads, amongst several others.
He said the impression the utter neglect of the areas creates in the mind of every well meaning person, is that the people of the area are only good for voting people into power, and not benefitting from democracy dividends.
The member representing Aboh Mbaise/ Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Matthew Nwogu made it categorically clear that he and his people are 100% behind Distinguished Senator Achonu and his deputy.
He said prior to the coming of the APC government the state used to enjoy relative security and peace, and queried if the situation is still the same presently, even as noted that his LGAs decayed infrastructure is glaring proof of the failure of governance in the state.
In their respective speeches chairman of the state campaign council and state party chairman, Hon Tochukwu Okere and Barr Calllistus Ihejiagwa, urged them people to vote the candidate of the party in the election, to enable a reenactment of the industrialization agenda of the first civilian governor of the state, Chief Sam Mbakwe.
