The difficult times being experienced presently by Nigerians, has assumed a more serious dimension following the industrial action recently embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Imo State Council.
Labour hinged its decision on the alleged action of Imo State Government whom it accused of using “thugs” to disrupt the delegates conference of the Imo State Council of NLC.
The national leadership of NLC led by Joe Ajaero, further alleged that the Imo State Government resorted to the alleged use of thugs when it allegedly failed to “influence the delegates” for the scheduled delegates conference to vote for Imo government’s prefered candidates for the leadership of NLC in Imo, among other issues.
Sadly, the strike action has among other things, paralyzed the power sector in Imo as the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, has not been able supply power to the state and parts of the South East for barely a week now. EEDC in an official statement, has said that the power outage currently being experienced in some parts of the South-East is a result of the industrial action by the organised labour union in Imo State.
The organisation said “the industrial action has led to the shutting down of its source of supply, leaving it with no energy to distribute.”
The situation has worsened the economic hardship in the state at a time the citizens are grappling with acute currency and fuel scarcities.
Since many businesses, depend on electricity or power to survive; even most households depend on electricity to pump water, just as hotels, restaurants, cold rooms, baring saloons, laundry services and other SMEs depend on electricity especially, public power supply, it therefore becomes a matter of urgency that both the Imo State Government and the leadership of NLC must put heads together to end the current logjam. Imo people have indeed had enough of suffering and hardship.
