…Silverbird Tv, AIT/Ray Power affected
The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC has revoked the licences of Imo Broadcasting Corporation, IBC Owerri and 51 other broadcast stations in the country.
The Commission said the revocation followed non-payment of debts owed the commission by the affected broadcast channels.
Other affected stations are Silverbird Television network, Rhythm FM stations in Abuja, Lagos, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Jos and Benin-City; AIT/Ray Power FM network; Greetings FM network; Tao FM, Okene; Zuma FM, Suleja; Crowther FM, Abuja; WeFM Benin; Classic FM, Abuja and Lagos and ClassicTV Lagos.
Equally affected are Beat FM Lagos, Splash FM, Ibadan; Rock City FM, Abeokuta, Family FM Ilogun; Space FM, Ibadan, Radio Jeremi Effurum, Breeze FM, Vibes FM, Family Love FM, and Wave FM.
States whose broadcast stations are also affected include Kogi, Kwara, Rivers, Niger Anambra, Kebbi, Lagos, Borno, Gombe, Osun, Ogun, Zamfara, Ondo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Yobe.
The commission, in a statement dated August 19, 2022, recalled that in May this year, it had published list of licensees who are indebted to it and gave such debtors two weeks within which to pay or have their licences withdrawn and frequencies reassigned.
It regretted that three months after, none of the defaulting stations complied resulting in its latest sanction.
It gave the stations whose licences have been revoked 24 hours from August 19, 2022 to shut down.
The commission also advised broadcast stations which are yet to renew their licences for the current duration to do so within the next 30 days to avoid sanctions.
It also called on Internet Protocol Television, IPTV and other stations which stream online to register with the commission to avoid disconnection.
IBC owned by the Imo State government is the operator of Orient 94.5FM and Channel 59 TV, Owerri.
