Veteran labour leader, Comrade Basil Iwu has been elected chairman Imo State Council of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, JPSNC.
Comrade Iwu was elected alongside Comrades Lekia Gbenekane Mamah, Vice Chairman, Uche Nwigwe Secretary, James Chukwudi Assistant Secretary and Rosemary Ukpabi Treasurer, in a keenly contested election.
Comrade Tommy Okon, National Vice Chairman Joint Negotiating Council, JNC, and National President Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, worked as returning officer at the election and also inaugurated the new executive.
The election was observed by representatives of the Office of Head of Civil Service, Imo State, Commissioner for Employment, Labour and Productivity, as well as officials of the Department State Security.
Inaugurating the team, Comrade Okon charged them to work as a team to better the lot of Imo workers.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Comrade Iwu, who is also the Imo State Branch Chairman of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in the new executive.
Comrade Iwu who recently attended an education trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, sponsored by the National Headquarters of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, also promised constructive engagement with government for improved welfare and working environment for workers in the state.
He lauded the state governor Senator Hope Uzodinma for payment of 13th month salary to workers last December and for the provision of free buses for them.
He also pleaded with him to commence payment of arrears owed some workers, implement the N30.000 minimum wage and lifting of embargo on promotion.
The National Public Service Negotiating Council, NPSNC, is a consultative platform for government and organised labour at the federal and state levels, for the purposes of addressing issues concerning the welfare and condition of service of workers in the public service.
