From Joe Ezuma, Port Harcourt
The Sole Administrator, Rivers State Waste Management Agency, (RIWAMA), Bro. Felix Obuah has explained why wastes would be noticed in some areas of Port Harcourt, the State capital and its environs, from today, Saturday, May 22, 2021.
There has been a recrudescence of refuse heaps dotting in some places within and around port Harcourt in recent times, there by rubbing off the gains the state capital had gained in coming back to garden city status
The development has given much concern to residents at the affected areas. Obuah, shortly after an official visit to the affected dumpsites at the weekend,, revealed that some of the major RIWAMA dumpsites have serious challenges which the Agency is doing everything humanly possible to put them back into use without delay, so as to commence full utilization of the affected dumpsites.
The RIWAMA boss therefore explained that evacuation of wastes would be delayed in some parts of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital, and its environs, for some time due to the challenges at the dumpsites.
He appealed to residents in Port Harcourt and its environs especially from the affected areas where wastes would be noticed, to bear with the Agency as everything humanly possible is being done to ensure that the dumpsites are put back to use without delay and the wastes evacuated.
He also appealed to the good people of Aluu Community, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State to bear with the Agency and co-operate with the State government as everything possible would be done to see that the access road leading to one of the major dumpsites located in the area is rehabilitated.
The people have been agonizing over non fixing of the road that passes through their town to one of the biggest dumpsites in the state.
The RIWAMA Sole Administrator further called on residents in the affected areas to observe sanitary decorum and not to take undue advantage of the situation to dump their wastes indiscriminately.
While expressing thanks to them for their understanding, Bro. Obuah assured that the Agency would not relent in its effort to ensure that the State is kept clean at all times.
