The last may not have been heard of the recent arrest and brutalization of Imo Vendors and Newspaper Distributors as authoritative sources within their circle have revealed ongoing plan to drag Imo State Government and the acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba to court.
Nigeria Newspoint gathered that the aggrieved vendors and distributors are planning to press fundamental rights abuse charges against the parties over what they described as illegal and unconstitutional arrest and beating of their members while carrying out their legitimate business.
Recall that operatives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Intelligence Response Team, IRT, headed by Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari had Monday last week swooped on No 5 Rotobi Street, Owerri, where Vendors and distributors receive and distribute newspapers, and arrested scores of them.
Those picked up it was alleged were assaulted and beaten up resulting in various degrees of injuries and bodily harm.
Angered by the alleged breach of their constitutionally guaranteed fundamental human rights, the newspaper middlemen are currently said to be in the process of briefing their lawyers and furnishing them with relevant evidence that could help them present water tight case against the two parties.
Sources told our correspondent that the vendors are incensed that after trampling on their basic rights, neither the government nor the police have deemed it necessary to apologize to them even when everybody knows they infringed on their rights.
In the face of alleged obduracy on the part of the state institutions the aggrieved group it was learnt resolved to drag them to court being the last hope of the common man, to seek damages.
