In his bid to check protest which is gradually becoming incessant in Owerri, the Imo State capital, it has been observed that the Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma has deployed military personnels within Owerri metropolis to clamp down on intending protesters.
It could be recalled that the Governor recently, while receiving members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW, and Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONADWAP) who were on solidarity visit to Government House made it clear that he would no longer tolerate protest in order to protect the lives and properties of the state.
And barely one week after that threat, Imo citizens on Tuesday woke up to behold stern looking soldiers all over the major roads and streets in the metropolis. Some of the soldiers who spoke to our correspondent said they were not aware of the details of their mission.
Some residents of the state capital who spoke on the development condemned what they perceived as militarization of the state and called on the governor to immediately send the soldiers back to their barracks as Imo is a democratic entity.
They declared that in a democracy freedom of association or assembly is a natural right that can’t be taken away from the people by any individual no matter how highly placed.
