The member representing Ikeduru State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Amb. Uche Ogbuagu has been commended for his efforts in reconstructing the Ikeduru Sports Stadium at Iho.
The commendation was made by a team of sports journalists in the state when they visited the stadium on an inspection visit.
They said it takes an individual with genuine love and passion for the development of his constituency to embark on such gargantum projects as Amb. Ogbuagu is undertaking in Ikeduru, with particular attention to the stadium complex.
According to them, the Ikeduru stadium ranks among the best they have visited in the state with its state of the art facilities and observed that it is more commendable when one notes that the stadium is been done by an individual.
They listed some of the facilities to include, an expansive airconditioned three room dressing room with individual player wardrope and toilet facility, a one storey airconditioned VIP stand with press gallery and private convenience, a four room public convenience and a borehole facility, among others.
The team expressed particular excitement at the dressing room and posited that the facility can compete favourably among the best in the country when completed, and urged Amb. Ogbuagu to make adequate arrangement for security at the stadium when the project completed.
They tasked the Interim Management Committee of Ikeduru to consider the option of building an indoor sports hall in the stadium using the fund made available for the construction of the stadium since Amb. Uche Ogbuagu has undertaken the reconstruction of the stadium with his personal resources.
According to them, the indoor sports hall will enhance the promotion of other sporting activities like wrestling, table tennis, lawn tennis, judo, etc, as well as attract sporting competitions to Ikeduru in view of her proximity to the state capital and the position of the stadium as one of the best in the state.
Speaking to the team of journalists when contacted on telephone, Amb. Uche Ogbuagu expressed pleasant surprise at the unscheduled visit. He traced the story of the stadium reconstruction to the promise he made to the people of Ikeduru at the finals of his football competition in January, 2019.
According to him, the journey to reconstruct the stadium started in January, 2019 when he promised to hand over a new stadium to the people of Ikeduru before the next edition of his football competion.
Amb. Ogbuagu told the team of sports journalist that when Gov. Emeka Ihedioha upon his inauguration instructed every local government in the state to construct a stadium, he made every effort to convince the Transitional Committee Chairman of Ikeduru to liase with other leaders in Ikeduru to find another area of need where the money can be put to use since he has already promised to reconstruct the staduim and deliver it on the 26th of December, 2019, but all his efforts yielded no result.
He said he was sad to discover that the IMC Chairman of Ikeduru and some leaders still went ahead to commence the construction of stands inside the staduim without the requisite processes involved in the award of contract, even when he has since commenced the reconstruction of the staduim.
Some sports journalists in the team include, Solomon Onu, Cosmos Chukwuemeka, Chris Abiaziem, Benny Nasa, Anthony Ogbekile, Sampson Orji, among others.
