The Commissioner for Education, Prof. (Mrs) Viola Adaku Onwuliri has directed the Education Secretaries and the Area Evaluators of Education (AEEs) to constantly monitor the activities of the Head teachers and Principals of Public schools located in their areas.
Prof. Onwuliri gave the directive in her office during an interactive meeting she had with the Education Secretaries and the Area Evaluators of Education (AEEs) of the 27 Local Government Areas. She reminded them that they are the critical administrators of education of the grassroots and the eyes of the Ministry in their localities; therefore should not be avenue for scandals. The Education Commissioner warned that no school Head would be allowed to do whatever he/she likes.
Prof. Onwuliri maintained that the Rebuild Imo Government of Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha wants the Ministry to get it right in Education and restore public confidence in the system; thus the need to shun extortions and compromise by the Head teachers, Education Secretaries AEEs and the Principals. She made it clear that no public school in the state should collect money from any pupil or student, except the approved N200 for a badge, N300 for a prospectus and N500 per child as handling charge, totaling Nl,000.
She reiterated that our people should be allowed to operate at their various levels and our children be encouraged to go to public schools without being over burdened with levies.
The Commissioner, therefore, mandated the Education Secretaries and the Area Evaluators of Education to go round the schools in their areas to ascertain how much the Head teachers and the Principals collected from the pupils and students and the number of teachers in each School and their qualifications. Prof. Onwuliri directed the Area Evaluators of Education to go to all the private schools in their areas to authenticate their status as the Ministry has set up a committee on illegal and unapproved schools.
Speaking the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. John Uzoma said the essence of the meeting was for them to key Into the Rebuild Imo Government’s policy in the Education Sector, know their challenges and see where the Ministry would come in.
In their separate responses, they thanked the Commissioner for the forum and her pieces of advise, but drew her attention to some of their challenges like lack of offices in the LG.As, lack of running cost, Inadequate number of teachers, reduction in enrolment figures, lack of mobility etc.
