The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the apex umbrella body of Nigerian Students at home and in the Diaspora, has passed a vote of implicit confidence on the Vice Chancellor of Imo State University Owerri, Prof Adaobi Obasi, for her sterling qualities, commitment and relentless efforts that have repositioned and turned around the fortunes of the institution.
The association also commended the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Martins Uchenna Nwankwo, for conducting the most credible, transparent, free and fair SUG election that is and will remain a reference point in the history of IMSU.
The Coordinator, Zone B of NANS, Comrade Godson Okereke, (Aluta Bishop), stated this in a release he signed and made available to the press recently.
According to him, “Prof Adaobi Obasi, aside being an erudite scholar, is seasoned Administrator, a compassionate mother, a devout Christian and prudent manager of men and resources, who despite assuming office at a very critical and turbulent period, weathered the storm and has fast tracked infrastructural development, enhanced academic excellence, ensured that peace, tranquility and mutual co-existence reigns in the academic community.
She has also improved the quality of teaching and learning. This has culminated in the introduction of more courses into the school’s curriculum and accreditation of others including the Law Faculty which lost accreditation for over five years as a result of poor or non-existent necessary conditions and facilities. It is also on record that she has created a more conducive environment for academic and non-academic staff to perform optimally by facilitating the construction of more administrative and academic buildings in the university by prudently deploying funds and also blocking all financial loopholes and conduit pipes.
Responding to a question, Aluta Bishop, an acclaimed student leader and vocal defender of the rights of Nigerian students posited that, “reports from IMSU attest that, Prof Obasi’s zero tolerance for corruption, indolence, ineptitudes and all forms of officialmisconduct has put staff on their toes, resulting in optimal performance and achievement of set goals and objectives with precision”.
Comrade Okereke also averred that the several awards of excellence in Administration and Education Development garnered by Prof Obasi, including the one she received from the Faculty of Education, Abia State University, Uturu, in August last year are testimonies of her exploits and giant strides, hence she should be allowed to consolidate on her land mark achievements, as we believe the remaining months of her administration will further improve the system more especially now the man of excellence is incharge as the Governor of our dear state.
