The Imo State Honourable Commissioner for Education, Professor Viola Onwuliri has stated that it is now compulsory for teachers to teach students with Igbo language in the schools at the eastern states, so that they could communicate effectively with their mother tongue than the borrowed languages.
Prof. Onwuliri made this known during a one-day seminar on the use of Igbo language in teaching at the secondary schools organized by the State Education Management Board, SEMB, weekend at Owerri, where she said that Igbo language is a good communication channel both at home and schools.
She maintained that parents and teachers must endeavour to use it to communicate with their children at home while teachers also teach with it in schools so that it will impact on the degree of apprehension of the students.
The commissioner explained that it is worrisome the way some parents nowadays choose to force their children to speak English language which they are not fluent than the Igbo language.
According to the commissioner, the ministry would be approaching the state House of Assembly to enact a law in the use of Igbo language in schools because the Igbo language is gradually going into extinction.
She urged the teachers to write books with Igbo language, the culture and traditions of the Igbo people in order to promote the Igbo race.
Speaking also, Mr. Method Odoemena advised teachers to apply the attitude of thoughtfulness at home before engaging the students in the classroom.
Mr. Odoemena said that the approach of student centered teaching and learning will enable the teacher to know if the students are grappling with the lesson being taught in the classroom.
He added that the ability to identify when the students are struggling with their studies will enable the teacher to know if the students are measuring up with the lesson in the classrooms.
