Medical doctors in state government owned health establishments have commenced an indefinite industrial action in Imo state.
The notice to down tool was handed to newsmen today by the state chairman, Nigeria Medical Association NMA Dr. Duruewuru Kyrian.
According to him, the first phase of the strike involves all doctors in Imo state University Teaching Hospital IMSUTH, Orlu, Imo State Specialist Hospital Umuguma and Hospital Management Board HMB while the second phase will involve all doctors in private hospital and those in federal health centers.
He noted that the essence of the strike is to register their disaffection with the way Imo state government under Governor Rochas Okorocha has openly marginalized the medical practitioners in the state. He lamented that while other state government workers are enjoying the adjusted salary structure with regard to skipping of grade levels, salaries of Medical doctors in same government remains on old consolidated medical structure CONMESS, devoid of relativity and skipping.
Also, he informed that for the past four years, doctors in the state receive seventy percent 70% of their salaries, in addition to three months arrears owe to them.
Dr. Duruewuru hinted that in all these traversities, they have cautiously engaged the state government and her relevant agencies on ways to arrest the issues to no avail.
The doctors are therefore demanding among other things, the immediate payment of thirty percent 30% balance of the monthly salary of doctors which has accrued for 40 months, the commencement of full salary scale for medical doctors employed based on adjusted consolidated medical salary structure CONMESS with relatively and grade level skipping and the improvement of infrastructures in state ownee health institutions.
It could be recalled that NMA had earlier gave a 2 week autimatum to state government to address the burning issues which just expired today.
