Prominent leaders of Owerri zone under the aegis of Olu Owerri, a socio-cultural organization pushing for the economic and political upliftment of the zone, Sunday, unanimously endorsed the governorship and Imo East (Owerri zone) senatorial candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha for the 2019 general elections and Hon. Ezenwa Onyewuchi.
The event which took place at Ugwu Ekwema, Egbu Road Owerri had leaders and executive officers of the group drawn from the nine local government areas of the zone in attendance including a former House of Representative member for Owerri Federal constituency, Rt. Hon. Uche Onyeagucha.
Olu Owerri led by its President, Chief Martin Opara, made it clear that two candidates, remained the best candidates running for the governorship and Owerri senate seats of the state and called on every indigene of Owerri zone to see their quest govern Imo as well as represent the zone as a challenge to the zone.
Olu Owerri also decried the plot by particular zone to continue to hold on to power after 16 years describing it as the height of insensitivity and injustice.
Some leaders of Owerri who spoke at the event including Chief Fidel Onyeneke, Chief Leo Osuji Ebubeagu and Hon. Onyeagucha urged the entire nine local governments in Owerri zone to stand up to the challenge of electing Ihedioha and Onyewuchi as governor on March 2, and senator on February 16 noting that the zone has become an object of mockery by other zones because the zone has failed to produce a governor since the barely one year and six months administrating of late Chief Evan Enwerem between 1991 to 1993.
They unanimously lauded Olu Owerri for also endorsing Hon. Onyewuchi for Owerri zone senate pointing out that the lawmaker has the track and possesses the capacity representing Owerri zone in the senate demands stressing that they were confident that he will reproduce the good work he did at the House of Representatives at the red chamber.
Responding, Imo PDP governorship flag bearer and former Deputy Speaker, House of Representative, Rt. Hon. Ihedioha reminded Owerri zone people that the battle for Imo Government House was for indigenes of the zone nothing that Owerri has the best in terms of quality leaders and successful personalities in various sectors of the economy.
Ihedioha emphasized that rigging would be vehemently resisted in the coming elections and challenged the zone to protect their votes for PDP in all the elections. He donated an air-conditioned 18-seater bus to Olu Owerri to facilitate sensitization of the people. Hon Onyewuchi who represents Owerri Federal constituency in the National Assembly pledged to continue to support the group to vote for Ihedioha for Imo governor and himself for Owerri senate in order to continue to attract democracy dividends and development to the zone. Highlight of the event was the handing over a copy of a Holy Bible to Ihedioha as a mark of endorsement.
On his part, Hon. Onyewuchi commended Olu Owerri for its vision and love for Owerri zone which according to him manifested in the choice of his party governorship candidate and himself assuring that if they are elected in the elections both the state and zone will enjoy massive dividends of democracy.
The two term lawmaker and chairman of the House Committee on Labour and Employment maintained that having performed exceedingly well in the House of Reps in the past eight years in addition to boasting of enormous legislative experience Owerri zone will be taken to the next level of senatorial representation upon his election next month.
