The people of Owerri zone and entire Imolites have been urged to support the governorship candidate of the Accord Party and former governor Chief Ikedi Ohakim to restore equity and stability in our polity.
Making this appeal in chat with Nigeria Newspoint in Owerri, a political leader from Owerri zone, Chief Christopher Okere expressed the view that it is in the interest of the people of Owerri zone to sacrifice the next four years by supporting Chief Ohakim who will in turn support the people of the zone in 2023.
According to the Ngor Okpala- born Business Man “when you look at the situation in Imo today, the governorship position may go back to Orlu, which is not an option for an average Owerri man, considering the fact that Orlu has held this position for 16 solid years. And when you consider the fact that Owerri Zone has over forty five governorship candidates out of the sixty seven vying for the position.
He said even through only about five of them are prominent, these five have the capacity to split the votes from the zone which could make things easy for either Senator Hope Uzodimma or governor Rochas Okorocha who is desperate to impose his son-in-law on Imo people since just two of them come from Orlu Zone with twelve local governments.
He said even though Owerri Zone has more registered voters, they must keep in mind that many of those voters are people from outside the zone including Orlu who may not share the sentiments of voting for a candidate from the zone.
Chief Okere who lamented the truncation of the zoning agreement in 2011 warned against another mistake in 2019.
On the promise by some candidates to go for only one term and hand over to Owerri Zone, he said “we all know such agreements are not enforceable.
That was the same why Governor Okorocha deceived us and swore at the alter at Assumpta Cathedral that he was only coming to “RESCUE” Imo for four years but after punishing Imo people for eight years in the name of governance, he still wants to impose his son-in-law who is from the same zone with him on us.
He said Ohakim is now more experience having gone through the pain of loosing power and so more mature to govern Imo going forward. “He has also learnt from that his mistakes just like every one of us makes mistakes”.
The politician also appealed to the people of Orlu zone to show understanding and empathy for the people of other zones.
He said as Ndi Igbo who frown and accuse northerners especially Fulanis of high jacking Nigeria, we must not be a seen to be behaving in the same manner among ourselves.
Speaking further, he said” as an Owerri man, I would prefer to have an Imo governor of Owerri zone extraction but with the realities today, it is better to sacrifice the next four years by supporting governor Ohakim and be sure of 2023 than to split our votes and create room for a candidate from Orlu zone who will definitely want to be in power for the next eight years after which we are not still sure of getting it”.
