Politicians beware of overheating the polity

As political activities are at their peak to usher in the 2019 general elections in a few weeks’ time, it will be right to observe and note certain dangerous trends that could jeopardize the elections and the well being of Nigerians.
Recently, it was in the news that the present Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen was being threatened for his failure to declare his assets which is required of any serving public officer at the assumption of a public office.
It was also allegedly reported that a sitting president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria vehemently refused to turn up for a public debate where he could have given a good account of his stewardship in the past four years and a blueprint of his second term in office.
Thirdly, it has been observed that while electioneering is going on at every nook and cranny of this geographical expression known as Nigeria, some politicians have taken it upon themselves to indulge in the campaign of calumny.
We therefore, make bold to state categorically clear, that it has been reported that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, actually declared his assets on assumption of office, except for perhaps, those properties he acquired while in office as CJN.
If, however, he was found guilty of the said offence, it should have been executed through due process by taking the matter to the National Assembly and National Judicial Council (NJC) for proper investigation and administration of justice.
It is not in the interest of Nigerians and democracy to begin now to throw up such sensitive issues that could unseat a high ranking judicial officer now that the general elections are at hand since this could also arm-twist the Nigerian Judiciary and make it incapable of performing its role as it should be.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should understand the implications of such rash decisions and actions.
Similarly, politicians whose stock in trade is always based on the defamation of the character of their colleagues in the opposition or other political parties should know that it is absolutely wrong to castigate their opponents in the bid to win a cheap political votes at the detriment of others.
It is therefore very necessary that everybody who is involved in all the above activities tread with caution and avoid over heating the polity with its undesirable consequences so that we can continue to advance on the path of progress as a nation.
