The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Adamawa State Council, has condemned in strong terms the recent attack on some Journalists by condemned criminals at the premises of Hight Court No. 3 complex, Yola.
It noted with concerned that the Journalists who were in the Court room to carry out their legitimate duties of reporting the proceedings during which eight suspected criminals were sentenced to death by hanging, were assaulted by the condemned criminals in apparent protest for judgement passed on them by the presiding Judge.
More worrisome, was the Combat way and manner the criminals freely engaged the Journalists at the Court premises without the presence of any armed security operative, thus leaving the victims at the mercy of unarmed Prison Warders.
This is really absurd and appalling given the failure of the Court and Prison Service to provide adiquate security and ensure safety of people in the Court premises at any point in time.
That condemned criminals could revolt against the Court in this manner at the passage of death sentence by the Judge, clearly exposed the lack of safety of lives and property in our Courts in the state.
The State Executive Council (SEC) of the NUJ, viewed the Wednesday January16, 2019 attack on its members, as a complete onslaught on Journalists and Journalism profession in the State by the authorities concerned.
While acknowledging the remorse expressed by the Comptroller of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) Adamawa State Command, the SEC urges the NPS and the State Judiciary to always liaise with relevant security operatives to provide adequate security in Courts during proceedings.
