…Refers 14 to be discharged through court
The Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice Paschal Nnadi has released 24 inmates of Owerri Prisons during the 2018 Jail Delivery exercise.
The event which held Monday through Tuesday this week saw the Chief Judge also directing that about 14 inmates be also discharged from the various courts where their matters were taken to.
Some of those who regained freedom during the exercise include Ifeanyi Atumonyegwu who was discovered to have overstayed, Nzeribe Nwankwo who was remanded since 2010, Eric Iwu remanded since 2014, Chinaza Nwaowere, Monday Nwaonu remanded since 2014, Marshal Orji who remanded since 2008 and Moses Echenini remanded since 2005.
Similarly, Ikechukwu Azike who was remanded since July 2008 was also released including Onyebuchi Ogamba remanded since 2007; Okechukwu Okeke remanded since 2007 was released, Anayo Odu remanded since 2006, Obinna Ibe remanded since 2006, Christian Obionuma remanded since 2006, Tobias Dike remanded since 2011, Nicholas Nwawunze remanded since 2012 and Obinna Nzeribe remanded since 2005 were all released.
Others include Ihenacho Onyeike remanded in 2008, Ndidi Ajoku remanded since 2008, innocent Omuka remanded since 2005, Emmanuel Alegbe remanded since 2009, Nduka Ibekwe remanded since 2008, Okwudiri enyia remanded since 2010, Chimauche Ihenacho remanded since 2008 and Chinedu Maraizu who was remanded since February 2006.
The Chief Judge who disclosed that the Attorney general of the State had filed nolle prosequi in the matters involving those released, charged the freed inmates to turn a new leaf in their lives and remain law abiding. The Chief Judge had earlier disclosed that the jail delivery exercise was in line with the powers of his office.
The Comptroller of Prison in charge of Owerri Prison thanked the chief judge and his team for the visit saying that the exercise helps to decongest the prison.
