The lawmaker representing Nkwerre State Constituency in the Imo House of Assembly, Hon. Chika Madumere, Monday began the disbursement to bursary allowances to university and tertiary institution students from his constituency.
Well over 250 students drawn from different tertiary institutions in Imo State who are from Nkwerre State Constituency benefited from the scheme. Speaking during the official disbursement of cash allowances to the students, Hon. Madumere who is also an engineer, disclosed that each of the beneficiaries drawn from all the wards in Nkwerre constituency, was screened accordingly to determine their eligibility and to ensure that genuine students in higher institutions who are from Nkwerre State Constituency got the bursary allowance.
The soft spoken lawmaker also revealed that beyond the token that was given to the benefiting students, the event was also a platform to interact with the students with a view to encouraging and mentoring them on the need to take their studies seriously.
Hon. Madumere who said he would love to make the scheme a yearly exercise, noted that he was spurred by the passion he has for education as the future of the youth, while reminding the students of the imperative of shunning vices such as cultism. He said some of them would become lawmakers, governors and other professionals in the near future adding that the scheme has nothing to do with politics.
On what he has achieved as a lawmaker in the last three years, the Nkwerre lawmaker said he attracted NDDC federal road projects to his constituency and beyond including sponsoring bills and motions that have impacted positively on not only his constituents but on Imolites in general.
Madumere who is running for a second term, Nkwerre State Constituency, recalled that his motion against the sale of petrol above N145 pump price brought down the price of the product in Imo after 2017 Christmas season, including his other motion against the activities of fake taskforces extorting residents of Owerri and other major towns in the state.
Speaking also, the apex leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nkwerre LGA, Chief Ngozi Anyaechie and the LGA party chairman of Nkwerre APC, described the bursary scheme as a wonderful step taken by the lawmaker urging the students to appreciate Madumere. Also speaking, the leader of Nkwerre Legislature Council, Hon. Jude Osuala said the scheme was the first of its kind in the area. One of beneficiaries, Chinenye Ugo expressed joy at the gesture describing Hon. Madumere as a nice person.
