The Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri has hold Rector, Dr. (Mrs) Celestina Njoku, described as the first of its kind in the history of the great citadel of learning in Imo State.
Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the institutions Governing Council, Chief Edwin Ogunbor, commended Dr. Njoku for being humble, development-orientated, hard-working, and peace-loving, adding that she has left a very big space to be filled.
He advised that the incoming Rector should continue from where she stopped, by studying the institution very well before embarking on things he or she would be remembered for.
Also speaking, a member of the Governing Council, Prof. Obianuju Oku, described Dr. Njoku as the biblical Deborah for her sterling achievements in her eight years of being at the helm of affairs at the polytechnic.
She also expressed joy that the outgoing Rector has made women proud.
Presenting one of the colloquium papers, the chairman of the Organizing Committee, Dr Obasi Oko, disclosed that Dr. Njoku emerged first in several areas in the institution which include being the first substantive female Rector and the first female Dean of the Students’ Affairs.
Dr. Oko expressed happiness that she enthroned remarkable staff development in terms of higher education attainment and gender spread in management position.
Adding his voice, President of the Polytechnic’s Students’ Union Government, Comrade Williams Okoro, lauded Dr. Njoku for her exemplary and uncommon leadership of the institution, urging the Governing Council to extend her tenure.
Earlier, Prof. C.C. Eze who represented the Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Prof. F.C Eze as the chairman of the event, commended the out-going Rector on her worthwhile performance, and recalled how she and her husband, Prof. Jude Njoku, a former Vice Chancellor of FUTO encouraged him to leave the banking sector and join the academia, pointing out that he is now a professor.
Overwhelmed by the eulogies poured on her, the out-going Rector, Dr. Njuko thanked God, her husband, Prof Jude Njoku and her children, the management, staff and students as well as the host community, for enabling her to make her contributions to the continued growth and development of the institution.
Dr. Njoku also advised the Chief Executive Officers of government agencies to always obey the extant rules and regulations in their operations.
The well-attended ceremony featured a documentary exhibiting the legacies of the out-going Rector, cultural display and gift item presentation to Dr. Njoku by the polytechnic Primary school, and cultural display by OPD dancer troupe.
