The Imo State House of Assembly on Tuesday, commenced an impeachment process against the Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere over allegations of gross misconduct ,dereliction of duty, imprisonment for theft in United states of America, among other allegations.
The petition which was tendered by the deputy speaker, Ugonna Ozuruigbo ,who represents Nwangele LGA and thirteen other lawmakers alleged that the embattled deputy governor of “absconding from his office more than three months without permission and therefore should be impeached
The lawmakers equally accused Madumere of refusing to carry out official duties assigned him by the governor, refusal to attend State Executive Council Meetings, refusal to hold meetings with the governor and commissioners and imprisonment for theft in the USA.
The speaker, Acho Ihim, said that the petition met and surpassed the required 1third as provided in Section 188 (2) 11 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The lawmaker, representing Oru West LGA, Donatus Onuigwe who opposed the impeachment proceedings was suspended by the speaker immediately.
The Assembly is made up of 27 members but four members who were sympathetic to Madumere were penultimate weekend suspended for “unpaliamentary conduct” paving way for the impeachment proceedings on the deputy governor.
A six-man committee headed by Kennedy Ibe, member, representing Obowo LGA was set up to probe the allegations and report back to the House within seven days. Madumere recently fell out with Rochas Okorocha over his succession plans.
While Okorocha wants his chief of staff, Uche Nwosu to succeed him, Madumere,is laying claims to the governorship position thereby causing problems between them.
Meanwhile, the embattled number two citizen, Prince Eze Madumere has dismissed all the allegations raised against him describing them as ploy to give him a bad name in order to crucify him.
Prince Madumere who opened up on his travails in a release signed by his press secretary Uche Onwuchekwa denied in totality the four allegations saying as an administrator he has always been conscious of his duties as deputy governor and equally carries them out.
On the issue of abandonment of duty he stated that contrary to the allegation he has been executing his duties such as superintending over boundary issues in the state as could be attested to by his interventions in boundary disputes in Umuoma, Ihitte Uboma LGA and Ihube, Okigwe LGA.
With regard to refusal to attend constitutionally mandated proceedings of the State Executive Council and meeting with the governor on issues of governance of the state Prince Madumere explained that government is run on processes and procedures which includes modes of communication between officials of government adding that at no time has scorned any official duty duly and properly communicated to him. He stated that he is not spirit to know where and when meetings hold when to communicated even as he stressed that he cant force himself on the governor since he has declared persona non grata at Government House.
He also took exception to allegations that he concealed felonious information of imprisonment in the US stating that the House demonstrated gross lack of due diligence saying if they had done that they would have known that the two times he had suffered incarceration were on behalf of Gov Rochas Okorocha stressing that at no time has he been convicted of any wrongdoing.
