As the dust raised by the recent Mega Rally of the All Progressive Congress, APC in Owerri continues to swirl, findings have uncovered reasons the chieftains of the party in the South East stayed away from the rally said to have been organized in support of president Mohammadu Buhari.
Governor Rochas Okorocha had last Monday organized what was tagged South East APC Mega Rally in Support of President Buhari at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Imo State capital with almost all notable leaders of the party in the zone including President Buhari appointees and Federal Lawmakers shunning the event.
According to a highly placed party source who spoke to Nigeria Newspoint on condition of anonymity,APC leaders in zone stayed away from the rally because Gov Okorocha had an ulterior motive and never consulted nor carried them along in the planning of the rally.
The source revealed that the party leaders got credible intelligence that the real motive behind the rally was to use it to push further his alleged third term agenda through
his proxy and son in law, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu.
It was gathered the fears of these leaders was actually given credence that day when Ugwumba Nwosu who ordinarily was not supposed to be in the list of dignitaries who were supposed to speak at the event, was granted chance to speak.
According to the sources Ugwumba Nwosu as a personal aide of Gov Okorocha was not qualified to speak if the rally was really a South East rally considering the array of leaders of the party in the five states of the zone.It pointed out that his mounting the podium to speak confirmed the fears of the leaders.
Besides, the leaders were said to have stayed away because Gov Okorocha never discussed nor consulted them about the programme. The governor it was learnt organized and executed it as one man show and as a result the leaders decided to boycott it.
“As stakeholders, did you expect them to attend an event they knew nothing about? No sensible politician would have taken such risk as it could backfire” the source stated further.
Last Monday’s mega rally was boycotted by notable APC Chieftains in the South East Zone including ministers, members of the National Assembly as well as other stakeholders from the region.
Those who were absent were the ministers,Prof Anthony Anwukah, minister of education(state), Dr Ogbonnaya Onu,Minister of Science and Technology, Okechukwu Enalamah, Minister of Trade and Investment, and Geoffery Onyema,Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prince Eze Madumere, Imo Deputy Governor.
Others were,Sen.Ben Uwajumogu, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, Sen. Ifeanyi Araraume, Sen.Osita Izunaso, Sen.Hope Uzodimma, former Senate President,Ken Nnamani, Enugu State ex- Governor,Sullivan Chime, Hon Emeka Nwajiuba, Hon Jasper Azuatalam, APC(BoT) member, Mr Osita Okechukwu,Director General,Voice of Nigeria, VON, Chief Jim Nwobodo,among others.
