The battle of wits and attrition which has been raging between the camps of lmo State Governor, Rochas Anayo Okorocha and that led by Senator Ifeanyi Araraume appear to have gone a notch higher with last Monday’s swearing in of Sen Uwajumogu as Secretary of the APC congresses and convention committee of the ruling party
Sources close to Imo State seat of power reveal that the governor and his camp, despite pretences are seriously tensed up by the development which they see as ominous.
Nigeria Newspoint gathered that this is why the governor fought tooth and nail, soon after the appointment was made public to quash it, apparently to stop his rival camp from having an upper hand in Abuja.
Unfortunately, his push in this regard it seems, failed to achieve any positive thing compelling him to accept the inevitable in good faith.
It was also learnt that it was, an obviously deflated and visibly worried Okorocha that attended the inauguration on Monday, sitting quietly and openly betraying signs of unhappiness at the event though he fought hard to hide it.
Nigeria Newspoint also learnt that the governor is not only worried that his enemies in Imo APC are seriously competing with him in Abuja, but is also unsettled by prospect of his anointed loyalists not emerging as party officials at ward, LGA and State levels in the coming congresses and convention.
The governor sources said had jubilated in the aftermath of President Muhammadu Buhari’s pronouncement that the
tenure elongation for party officials was illegal and called for a review which the governor thought would favour him.
However, his hope of taking absolute control of Imo APC with the sacking the likes of Senator Osita Izunaso who is one the arrow heads of his rival camp back fired when the April 9,National Executive Committee,NEC of APC granted waiver to all party officials to remain in office and re contest.
Following that badly needed lifeline the NWC which was reliably gathered is aware of the Gov Okorocha’s manoeuvering against them decided to fight back thus the alignment with the Senator Araraume led camp.
According to sources in Abuja the plan by Gov Okorocha to solely dictate and handpick officers for the party in the state has irreversibly crashed as the NWC is said to have resolved that no rigging would be allowed in the state.
Nigeria Newspoint gathered that the congresses in the state would be seriously monitored to ensure that they were conducted in the most free and fair manner to ensure that only the credible and acceptable persons emerged.
This latest twist to the ongoing drama of the struggle for the soul of Imo APC is being seen by pundits as yet another sign of the downward spiral of the Ugwumba Uche Nwosu must be governor policy of Gov Okorocha.
Those who spoke on the matter told Nigeria Newspoint that considering the total neglect the party suffered in the hands of the governor in the last seven years there was no way his son in law could emerge APC flagbearer in free and fair primary election. In fact, some said such can’t happen and that it is for this reason that Gov Okorocha has been fighting tooth and nail to grab the party structures in the state by all means possible.
