Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has come under heavy criticism over the strangulation of economic activities, forceful closure of business premises, proscription of movement and wanton harassment of Owerri residents since this week. In a chat with journalists in Owerri on Tuesday, a front line governorship aspirant in the state on the platform of APGA, Mr. Okey Ezeh bemoaned the action of the Governor, saying that the continued neglect of the wishes and feelings of the people by the Governor portends serious danger for the state, and cautioned the Governor to stop forthwith.Mr. Ezeh insisted that nothing justifies such attack on private entrepreneurship in Owerri, lamenting that Imo people are currently grappling with the worst indices of socio-economic prosperity in the history of the state. He added that such rash actions have further aggravated the already deplorable economic situation and caused incalculable losses. The management consultant wondered the kind of government that would bring commercial activities completely down for over forty-eight hours even in the face of dwindling revenues and abysmally poor GDP.According to him, “These are subsistence traders who make a living out of their own efforts, and the Governor is now making it impossible for them to earn a living. It is unbelievable! The people choose a government to the end that it will rule justly, that it will promote common good and guarantee the greatest happiness of the greatest number. It is now clear that either the Governor has an alternative reality of what the common good should represent or that he takes pleasure in the tears and sorrows of our people. He is most active in the areas that inflict pain, misery and poverty on the downtrodden, the vulnerable and the defenseless. This deliberate pauperization of our people must stop forthwith,” he warned.
Mr. Ezeh also pointed out that the incumbent administration has for long taken the patience of Imo people for granted and has capitalized on their peaceful disposition to unleash both structural and physical violence on them. He called on Imo people to be alive to their political rights and charged them to fully participate in every legitimate, popular and democratic process that will bring the ruinous misrule to an end come 2019.
